Lowe’s ChoiceDek Composite Decking Review-Part 1 of 3

Today’s composite decking review is for “ChoiceDek,” a composite decking material found exclusively at Lowe’s Home Improvement Centers. Although, neither one of us has used this product yet, (John has only used TREX), I thought it would be advantageous to look over the product and review their material, along with some of my comments.

When ChoiceDek, found out I was doing a review, they were kind enough, to send me a box of decking samples in various profiles and colors, along with one of their brochures. (I was actually amazed, at how many pieces they sent me. I will take pictures, then update this post later.)! I took the liberty to pick out and condense the most important points.

Note: As a side, I am in the process of obtaining various types of fastener’s-both screws and nails. I want to experiment with fastening an array of composite decking with a variety of composite fastener’s then review the results. Stay tuned!!

Who makes ChoiceDek?

ChoiceDek is manufactured by Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies, Inc.,(A.E.R.T), and is a registered trademark of the Weyerhaeuser NR Company.

What is ChoiceDek made of?

Recycled wood fibers and recycled plastic, such as milk jugs and grocery bags.

How is it manufactured?

The wood fibers are encapsulated in non-toxic polyethylene plastic, which makes the decking virtually moisture proof. In turn, the wood fibers, reinforce the plastic, making them stiffer and reducing its thermal movement. Decking planks are extruded and endure a slow curing process, which means the boards will not twist or warp.

Is ChoiceDek, non-toxic?

Yes. It’s also impervious to moisture and does not require any type of preservative treatment, water sealing or staining.

How long has ChoiceDek been in business?

A.E.R.T composite materials began in 1989, as commercial products for thresholds, bottom door rails and sub-sills for several national door companies, such as Peachtree and Therma-Tru Doors. Decking products were introduced in 1992.

Note: I used Peachtree doors for years in our area. I believe Therma-Tru was the first to have a fiberglass door. In both cases, I can vouch for the quality of the products.

  2. Installed ChoiceDek 3 years ago…severe expansion led to warping and cupping. Would never recommend to anyone.
